The Influence of the Media on Our Lives

The Influence of the Media on Our Lives

We often stop to think, “Does the media influence my decisions? Not! Imagine! Only people with no opinion are influenced by this! “Okay, but what if I told you that the media formed the opinion that you boast about having and using to defend yourself?

The process of media manipulation is much more subtle than subliminal messages, or those jingles that do not go out of their minds. The media can be a complete culture maker, not only selling the product, but creating a vacuum, which takes the form of a product, and showing how important it is to fill the void through consumption.

When we think of products we have a consumer society and propaganda. When we think of culture and opinion we have acculturation or molding of thoughts. In the case of acculturation, we have the media controlling the behavior, through the presentation of images that represent the ideals of happiness, success, beauty, and pleasure.

If such an idea does not resonate in society, the strategy changes

A gradual change is then made until it reaches the point defended by the media. This modeling is worth everything: Medical research, opinions of various experts, technological advancement and so many other arguments, just to convince you that what is being offered is the best alternative.

We see this with patterns of beauty, with models increasingly thinner on the runways, or in advertising campaigns, with the sculptural body of hours and hours of gym and increasingly insane diets. On the other hand, fast-foods, and the extremely caloric foods that are often associated with the pleasure of eating, the status and rapid lifestyle of large metropolises lead to the opposite: people increasingly distant from the “ideal” of beauty, and therefore more and more unhappy.

We have the programs that, made for the complete alienation of society, show the daily life as an eternal carnival, forgetting poverty, violence, and so many other problems. Others who, in turn, to the detriment of instruction and information, have a leveling below what society knows as leisure, making it believe that this is the fun of most of the people. These are only a few cases among so many aspects of the influence of the media, among many that we can cite.

But how can we defend ourselves against these media attacks?

The first step is the enlightenment of self. Through study and reflection, we can avoid many scams, and thus really form our own opinion, based on our own experiences and conclusions, not something brought by others.

Spiritism, as an enlightening doctrine, invites us at all times to study and review concepts through sensible and rational reflection.

Science, philosophy, and religion, the three basic pillars of spiritualism, certainly provide us with a wealth of knowledge and values for a better choice of what we really want for ourselves, rather than simply accepting something without thinking about what it is.

The power of the media about people and their interference in the world of law

It is not today that we see and know the force that the media has, and this becomes clearer when through all this force it comes to inculcate in people an idea or even an already formed point of view on a subject. And note that when we refer to the media, we are actually referring to all of its forms of placement, whether it is spoken, written, televised or even made by virtual means and other means that are possible.

It is not denied that the media has an odd relevance for the maintenance of a democracy, however, this does not mean that at the expense of this argument it can manipulate, albeit veiledly, everything that is conveyed in order to move the social mass in a given way.

That is why we must ask ourselves: to what extent should the media act and what are its limits in a truly democratic state?

This questioning consists in the fact that society is often nothing more than a maneuver in the hand of the media, used every time social support is seen as preponderant for a specific issue. Whenever a subject is lacking social support, and of course, with reciprocity between the media and the privileged with action, society is bombarded with news, reports, advertisements and even advertisements, which have the same objective, that is, to achieve the support of society.

In recent years, driven by the diffusion of the media, especially among the so-called lower economic power classes, the power of the media has grown even greater. All this influence and persuasion is especially evident, especially in the poorest part of society, since this one, formed mostly by people with little education, ends up taking as absolute truth everything that is transmitted, precisely because they do not have the means and/or conditions to disagree with what is said.

The biggest problem of all this, despite the influence already said, is the fact that many news reports mainly related to the legal universe, are almost always dissonant of what really is, that is, of truth. Many facts transmitted, especially on TV, bear no relation whatsoever to what they are, and this is simply because the truth in many moments “is not a good deal”, that is, it does not sell news and reason it ends up being passed, say, in a more interesting way.

If in the judicial process we are accustomed to the contradictory and ample defense, the same can not be said of the news published in the media, since in the great majority of times what is put in the form of news is not directed simply to inform or even enable that people are able to form their own convictions, quite the contrary, in the way that has been done, everyone who reads, watches or hears a certain news is much more conducive to following the opinion presented and defended than to properly form his own.

The influence generated by the media has reached such high levels that it has made the issue even more serious and worrying, since we have noticed that not even some public entities that should really care for the proper application of the law, not even these institutions have been able to remain immune to all this influence, in practice they have succumbed to this desperate cry of “justice” made by society, but that behind the media as a mediate author.

Just as an example of what is being said, we can quietly mention the question of eventual misconduct, which at the beginning referred only to traffic crimes. The actual discussion only came into existence when specific cases began to gain the cover of the newspapers and minutes in the news programs. Since then what has been seen is precisely what we have already called “banalization of eventual willfulness”, that is to say, if you have applied a specific legal fiction in an abstract way, only to prevent the application of a law, if it is correct, and invoke a more burdensome measure.
